Livestock Development
Funding source: USAID

The goal of the project was to increase agricultural productivity and income
among small and medium-scale farmers in Belize. The project resulted in an
improvement in the country's balance of trade through food import substitution
activities and increased exports, as well as a more equitable distribution of rural
income. Specifically, the project improved small and medium-scale farmers'
production efficiencies in the rearing of livestock and expanded market outlets
of these products, primarily through the development of import substitution
activities. The project financed five major activities including the development of:

  • Swine improvement program;
  • Pasture improvement program;
  • Dairy industry support programs;
  • Pork and beef processing technologies; and
  • Government policy analysis and formation.
